I could write volumes about this topic. I won’t. Because this column is about small and actionable steps that you can take today. So let’s keep it simple. Really simple. Listen up! Get your pens ready. Here it goes:
Listen to your body!
The premise that our body and our mind are parts of the same entity has been around for thousands of years. Then with religion on the rise, our bodies became our weakness, our sinful part (I am looking at you Christianity!). So in the West we spent the last like 2000 years parting from our bodies. And modern medicine perfected the coup against the body with a symptom based approach which includes cutting out or bombarding the “sick part” – the corpus delicti (See you later tonsils! How dare you get inflamed all the time?!).
Our bodies though, are a great gift! They are a perfect feedback system. Not only does body give feedback in terms of the environment (Does this setting right here feel good?). It also gives feedback about the physical and emotional needs of the system (You!) itself.
Listen to your body, when you get a “funny feeling” about a situation or a person, don’t rationalize it away. Trust those basic instincts developed over hundreds of thousands of years to ensure the survival of our species.
Listen to your body, when you are hungry, when you need to cry, when you really need a nap! Don’t watch that third episode of “Suits” when really your eyes are already falling shut! (Not that I have ever done that!) Nap! Stretch! Move! Eat! Kiss! Listen to your body!
Because if you do not listen to small and subtle hints, if you keep taking out a loan on your body, pay day will come. You will pay. Your body will make you. You will be forced to stop and listen. Depending on how long you have impeached your body you might develop a serious condition or “just” get the flu.
Be nice to your body, listen, because your body is You and can let you in on insurmountable wisdom!
So tell me, when you listen do you hear?
